Solveig Vidarsdotter (b. 1971) is an author and singing teacher. She made her debut in 2013 with The Scent of Ice, which was reissued by Lind & Co in 2017. The novel introduces police officer Ingrid Kvarnberg, who has returned to her home village and taken up a new position at the small local police station in Frostviken, Jämtland, in order to be closer to nature and family. There, she is partnered with Erland Skogmo, and throughout the series we follow the two police officers as they are faced with violent crimes as well as personal struggles. In June 2026, the much-anticipated fourth novel in the series, The Shroud of Shame, will be published.
Vidarsdotter was born and raised in Jämtland, where the Frostviken Murders series is set, but now lives with her husband, their cat and their dog on a small farm outside Skövde, Västergötland.

Thirty-two-year-old Ingrid Kvarnberg has just left a prestigious post as an inspector with Stockholm’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Her father has suffered a stroke and, in a twist of fate, a community officer position has opened up at the small local police station in Gäddede, in the Frostviken area of Jämtland, making it possible for Ingrid to return to her home village. Her only colleague at the station is Erland Skogmo, an older officer, but despite their differences, the two soon realise that they complement each other well. Ingrid has more experience of major crime and complex investigations, while Erland has greater, up-to-date local knowledge. Their precinct is vast and sparsely populated, its terrain dominated by mountains and forests, and the nearest regional CID, in Östersund, is more than three hours' drive away.
In this series, we follow realistic police procedures as violent crimes disrupt life in Frostviken. Solveig Vidarsdotter presents a rich cast of characters, drawing close to neighbours and family, local politics, and the Sámi community—particularly a few individuals who become very important over the course of the series. Through the novels, Vidarsdotter skilfully unfolds her mysteries while also shedding light on the modern challenges of life in this vibrant and fascinating landscape, far from the big-city lights.
